Fertility Procedures

After your fertility evaluation, your doctor may determine that you need surgery to improve your or to increase fertility. Some surgical procedures allow your doctor to get a better look inside your uterus and pelvic area, helping to diagnose any potential barriers to fertility.

The same surgery used to identify problems may also be used to correct them. Whether your need for surgery is due to fibroids, blocked tubes or other issues, there are a few different surgical options available to help you reach your pregnancy goals.

How to increase chances of pregnancy

Everyone trying to conceive is looking for ways to increase fertility. One of the main ways is to make sure that your reproductive anatomy is working correctly and that there are no roadblocks preventing an egg from implanting and growing in your uterus.

If you have been diagnosed with ovarian cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, or if you suspect you may have any of these conditions due to symptoms you’re experiencing, then it is important to talk to your doctor about having a procedure to correct these issues.

Scar tissue, polyps and blocked fallopian tubes can also affect your fertility, so an early diagnosis and corrective surgery are key ways to increase fertility.

What are some ways to increase fertility?

Hysteroscopy & Laparoscopy

Hysteroscopy and laparoscopy are minimally invasive procedures that can be used to diagnose and treat common structural issues in your reproductive anatomy.

Hysteroscopy can be used to remove fibroids, scar tissue, and polyps, as well as correct structural abnormalities such as a uterine septum.

Laparoscopy is used to treat scar tissue, open blocked tubes, remove ovarian cysts, treat ectopic pregnancies, destroy or remove endometriosis, remove fibroids, and remove diseased ovaries or damaged fallopian tubes.

Myomectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove fibroids. There are three types of myomectomy: hysteroscopic, laparoscopic, and abdominal. Each type varies in its level of invasiveness, but all are effective at removing fibroids and improving the structure of your uterus for pregnancy.

Your doctor will recommend a type of myomectomy depending on the size and location of your fibroids.

Though often used to bring relief from fibroid symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain and pressure, lower back pain, and spotting between periods, a myomectomy can also increase fertility.

Tubal Reversal

A tubal reversal is a procedure used to reverse a women’s previous sterilization or “tube-tying” surgery. In some cases a tubal reversal will allow you to become pregnant naturally through intercourse. However, age and other fertility factors play a major role in a tubal reversal’s success.

Some female sterilization procedures cannot be reversed, and your doctor will advise you on this during your appointment. If a tubal reversal is not an option due to this or other fertility factors, IVF is often still a possibility to achieve pregnancy.
